CRISIS RESPONSE SERVICES
Crisis counseling is available 24 hours/day; please call us at (310) 825-0768. CAPS offers in-person, walk-in services throughout the day, Mondays -Thursdays from 8am to 4:30pm & Fridays from 9am to 4:30pm .
Drop-in groups are available Monday - Friday at 10am.

Coping with Campus Violence: Tips for Dealing with Trauma
As details about Wednesday's events unfold, it is normal to have a wide range of thoughts, feelings and reactions. If you have experienced past traumas, including deaths, losses, violence or other assaults, you may be experiencing memories and feelings from those events and have increased symptoms now. For very public traumas, even those who have not directly experienced the crisis may be affected. The following tips are intended to help you deal with any reaction you may be having:
1. Know that everyone has a unique reaction.
Please recognize that experiencing any of these can be normal reactions and that, with time, there is a natural healing process which occurs. Over the next few days or weeks you may experience periods of:
- Denial, shock, numbness
- Moodiness and irritability
- Jumpiness, hyper-vigilance
- Worry, panic, anxiety
- Feelings of helplessness
- Sadness, depression
- Disturbing images or memories
- Nausea, headaches
- Feeling vulnerable or unsafe
- Social withdrawal
- Difficulty concentrating
- Difficulty sleeping
- Anger and blame of others
2. Feelings and reactions may come at different times and perhaps in waves.
3. Give yourself time to adjust.
Suggestions for things to try:
- Seek support from family and friends. Talking with others is healing.
- Structure your time.
- Be sure to eat well-balanced meals and stay hydrated.
- Avoid tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and excessive caffeine.
- Sleep and get plenty of rest.
- Give yourself permission to feel different.
- Alternate exercise with relaxation to alleviate some of the stress.
